The premise
A few days before Christmas, traveling entertainer Marc Stevens is stuck at nightfall in a remote wood in the swampy Hautes Fagnes region of Liège when his van breaks down. An odd chap who's looking for a lost dog then leads Marc to a shuttered inn.

When his van breaks down on a desolate stretch of Belgian woodland just before Christmas, itinerant singer Marc Stevens accepts shelter at a remote, long-closed inn — a decision that will cost him dearly. What begins as an eerie but seemingly innocent act of hospitality gradually unravels into something profoundly, viscerally wrong. Calvaire is a slow-burn descent into the darkest corners of rural isolation, anchored by deeply unsettling performances and a suffocating atmosphere of dread. French-Belgian extreme horror at its most uncompromising.
