The premise
A struggling artist buys a talisman that gives him love, fame and wealth. The talisman is a severed left hand, and it works perfectly, in fact, magically. But of course there is nothing free in this world, and after one year the devil comes and asks for his due.

In this shadowy French fantasy-horror from 1943, a penniless artist stumbles upon a peculiar talisman — a severed hand — that delivers everything he has ever craved: love, renown, and fortune. The gifts prove genuine, but the source of such miracles is far from benign, and the clock is already ticking from the moment he accepts the bargain. Drawing on classic Faustian tradition, the film wraps its cautionary tale in the moody, expressionist atmosphere of wartime European cinema.
