The premise

Anthology film from three European directors based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe: a cruel countess haunted by a ghostly horse, a sadistic young man haunted by his double, and an alcoholic actor haunted by the Devil.

Horror Vault's take

Three of European cinema's most distinctive directors each adapt a tale from Edgar Allan Poe's dark imagination, weaving together a trilogy of dread and desire. A cruel aristocrat, a man tormented by his own reflection, and a dissolute actor each find that their worst impulses summon something inescapable. Lavish visuals and an extraordinary cast lend these gothic fables a hypnotic, fever-dream quality unlike any conventional horror anthology. Poe's obsessions — guilt, madness, the supernatural — pulse through every frame.
