The premise

Set in Stalin-era Soviet Union, a disgraced MGB agent is dispatched to investigate a series of child murders -- a case that begins to connect with the very top of party leadership.

Horror Vault's take

In the iron grip of Stalinist Russia, where the official line insists that murder is a capitalist disease, one disgraced intelligence officer refuses to look away from a mounting trail of dead children. Stripped of his rank and hunted by the very apparatus he once served, he pursues a killer through a society built on fear and enforced silence. Child 44 is a bleak procedural that weaponises its historical setting — the dread here comes not just from a monster in the shadows, but from an entire government machine that would rather bury the truth than admit it exists.
