The premise
Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

When a massive, unknown creature tears through Manhattan, a group of friends find themselves trapped in the middle of a city in freefall — and the only record of what happens is the shaky camcorder footage they leave behind. Cloverfield drops viewers street-level into a kaiju nightmare, replacing the usual military-eye view with something far more personal and terrifying: ordinary people with nowhere to run. The film's relentless, you-are-there perspective turns New York's familiar skyline into a claustrophobic war zone. It's a monster movie reborn as a desperate survival document.
