Death Laid an Egg1968
“See them tear each other apart. Then see what they do with the pieces.”
Directed by Giulio Questi
The premise
A love triangle develops between three people who run a high tech chicken farm. It involves Anna (who owns the farm), her husband Marco (who kills prostitutes in his spare time) and Gabriella (the very beautiful secretary). Marco continues to kill as jealousy becomes more prevalent on the farm.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the clinical backdrop of an ultra-modern industrial chicken farm, this late-60s Italian giallo-adjacent thriller weaves a dangerous love triangle into something far more sinister. Three people — a farm owner, her husband, and a seductive secretary — circle one another in a slow-burning dance of jealousy and ambition, while a shadow of brutal violence creeps ever closer. Director Giulio Questi uses the sterile, dehumanising setting as a provocative metaphor, lending the film an almost avant-garde unease. Fans of unconventional European genre cinema will find this one genuinely hard to shake.
