Horror Vault's take

Lars von Trier turns the camera on himself in this deeply unconventional meta-horror, playing a filmmaker collaborating on a plague-themed screenplay that begins to seep dangerously into the real world. Shot on grainy 16mm with a deliberate roughness, the film moves between the mundane rhythms of the writing process and increasingly disturbing visions of epidemic suffering. What begins as a creative exercise slowly mutates into something far more visceral and destabilising. This is provocation as cinema — patience will be tested and rewarded in equal measure.
