The premise

A circus' beautiful trapeze artist agrees to marry the leader of side-show performers, but his deformed friends discover she is only marrying him for his inheritance.

Horror Vault's take

In the shadowy world of a traveling circus, Tod Browning's pre-Code masterpiece turns the lens of horror on those society already fears — and the glamorous outsiders who dare to underestimate them. When a stunning trapeze artist sets her sights on a wealthy sideshow performer, the tight-knit community of carnival outcasts watches with quiet suspicion. What unfolds is a slow-burning tale of greed, cruelty, and the terrifying power of solidarity among the marginalized. Decades ahead of its time, Freaks remains one of cinema's most genuinely disturbing and morally complex horror films.
