The premise
A former circus artist escapes from a mental hospital to rejoin his armless, cult leader mother, and is forced to enact brutal murders in her name.

From director Alejandro Jodorowsky, Santa Sangre plunges into the fractured psyche of a young man shaped by a childhood steeped in circus spectacle, violence, and fanatical devotion. Escaping a psychiatric institution, he is pulled back into the orbit of his deeply controlling mother — a cult leader who has lost her arms and demands far more than loyalty. The film unfolds like a fever dream stitched from grand guignol horror and surrealist imagery, where the boundary between performance and brutality dissolves completely. Few horror films feel this genuinely unhinged and yet this precisely constructed.
