The premise
A mysterious — and suspicious — run of ill fortune plagues a teenage girl and her mother and sister on their hillside farm in this folk story set in the dark hills of Wales during the industrial revolution.

Set against the brooding, mist-draped hills of 19th-century Wales, Gwen follows a young girl struggling to hold her fractured family together as misfortune and menace close in from every direction. With her father absent and her mother's grip on reality slipping, Gwen becomes the last line of defence for those she loves. The film draws deeply on Welsh landscape and folklore to craft an atmosphere of creeping dread that feels rooted in the very soil. Whether the darkness is natural or something far older is a question the film lets linger.
