The premise

Five friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way, they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.

Horror Vault's take

A group of young road-trippers cutting through the Texas backwoods stumbles into a nightmare they never saw coming — one rooted deep in the rotting soil of a deeply wrong household. Tobe Hooper's 1974 landmark trades polished scares for something far more primal: a suffocating, sweat-soaked sense that civilization has completely run out. What unfolds is less a haunted-house story than a collision between ordinary youth and extraordinary, inescapable evil — with a chainsaw-wielding figure at its terrifying center.
