The premise

A Serbian émigré in Manhattan believes that, because of an ancient curse, any physical intimacy with the man she loves will turn her into a feline predator.

Horror Vault's take

In 1940s Manhattan, a mysterious Serbian woman carries a dark belief inherited from Old World folklore: that surrendering to physical passion will unleash something monstrous within her. Her marriage to an earnest American becomes a slow-burn study in longing, jealousy, and creeping dread as the boundaries between woman and predator grow disturbingly thin. Producer Val Lewton and director Jacques Tourneur weaponize shadow and suggestion, letting the audience's imagination do the heavy lifting. The result is a landmark of restrained, psychological horror that still unsettles decades later.
