The premise

While vacationing on a remote German island with his younger pregnant wife, an artist has an emotional breakdown while confronting his repressed desires.

Bergman's only true horror film follows a tormented painter and his devoted pregnant wife as they retreat to a desolate island, only for the boundary between waking life and nightmare to erode with terrifying consequences. Strange, aristocratic neighbors and visions from the artist's darkest interior begin to consume him from within. Shot in stark black and white, the film transforms psychological collapse into something genuinely uncanny — closer to a waking ghost story than a conventional breakdown drama.
