The premise
When Oskar, a sensitive, bullied 12-year-old boy, meets his new neighbor, the mysterious and moody Eli, they strike up a friendship. Initially reserved with each other, Oskar and Eli slowly form a close bond, but it soon becomes apparent that she is no ordinary young girl.
Horror Vault's take
In a cold, quiet Swedish suburb, a lonely and bullied boy finds an unlikely kindred spirit in the pale, peculiar child who moves in next door. Their tentative friendship deepens into something profound and protective — but the darkness surrounding his new companion runs far deeper than it first appears. Director Tomas Alfredson crafts a horror film of rare emotional restraint, where the monster mythology is inseparable from a genuine, aching portrait of isolation. Beauty and dread coexist in every frame, making this one of the most quietly devastating vampire stories ever committed to screen.
