The premise

An alcoholic, abusive ne'er-do-well is shown the error of his ways through a legend that dooms the last person to die on New Year's Eve before the clock strikes twelve to take the reins of Death's chariot and work tirelessly collecting fresh souls for the next year.

Horror Vault's take

On the stroke of New Year's Eve, a dissolute and violent man is drawn into a chilling folk legend: whoever is the last soul to die before midnight must spend an entire year driving Death's ghostly carriage, harvesting the newly departed. Swedish silent cinema pioneer Victor Sjöström weaves together layers of memory and moral reckoning in a film that feels as mournful as it does deeply unsettling. Groundbreaking double-exposure photography conjures translucent apparitions that still unnerve a century later. This is horror as moral fable — patient, poetic, and quietly devastating.
