Set against the backdrop of the 1912 Balkan War, a group of strangers find themselves stranded on a Greek island under strict plague quarantine with no hope of escape. Tensions simmer as fear and boredom give way to something darker — an old peasant woman becomes convinced that a young woman among them is a supernatural predator feeding on the group's misfortune. Boris Karloff commands the screen as a rigid military general whose iron rationalism is slowly eroded by dread and suspicion. This Val Lewton production relies on psychological unease and shadowy atmosphere rather than outright shocks to deliver its chills.
