The premise
A man takes up residence with a mysterious marquis and is soon persuaded to enter into an asylum for preventative therapy. Things are not what they seem, and the marquis may be even more sinister than what the young man might have predicted.
Horror Vault's take
Czech filmmaker Jan Švankmajer brings his signature surrealist vision to this darkly comic horror fable, blending live action with grotesque stop-motion animation sequences. A naive young man falls under the influence of a charismatic and deeply unsettling marquis, who convinces him that a stint in a nearby asylum is for his own good. What unfolds is a nightmarish exploration of who truly holds power — the keepers or the kept. Loose inspirations from Poe and de Sade simmer beneath a film that is as philosophically provocative as it is disturbing.
