Set in the shadow of Nazi occupation in 1930s Prague, this Czech New Wave landmark follows a crematorium worker whose fervent, almost religious belief in cremation as spiritual release begins to warp into something far darker. Rudolf Hrušínský delivers a mesmerising performance as a man whose philosophical obsessions make him dangerously susceptible to the era's rising ideology. Director Juraj Herz deploys disorienting camerawork and fragmented editing to place the viewer inside a mind quietly unravelling. It is a portrait of ordinary evil — chilling precisely because its subject never stops believing he is doing good.
