The premise
A mad scientist captures young women and drains their blood, in order to keep alive an ancient, evil duchess.

In this moody Italian Gothic chiller, a fanatical scientist terrorizes a city by preying on young women — all in service of a dark and centuries-old secret. The film blends pulpy mad-science with old-world vampire mythology, wrapping its macabre premise in shadowy expressionist visuals. An early entry in European horror, it helped pave the way for the stylish Gothic cinema that would flourish in the decades to follow.
