The premise

Without a family, penniless and separated from her sister, a beautiful chaste woman will have to cope with an endless parade of villains, perverts and degenerates who will claim not only her treasured virtue but also her life.

Horror Vault's take

Adapted from the infamous novel by the Marquis de Sade, this 1969 Euro-horror sees a young, virtuous woman cast adrift in a cruel world after losing everything she has ever known. Alone and destitute, she becomes prey to a relentless succession of corrupt clergy, sadists, and predators who test the very limits of her will to survive. Director Jess Franco stages her odyssey as a lurid, nightmarish picaresque through 18th-century depravity, with Klaus Kinski and Jack Palance among the gallery of memorable menaces. It is a film that wears its exploitation roots openly while posing uncomfortable questions about innocence, suffering, and a world indifferent to virtue.
