The premise

Raised with an imaginary companion in place of real friendship, she struggles to forge genuine human bonds — and her attempts grow increasingly desperate and dangerous. Director Lucky McKee crafts something rare: a film that earns genuine sympathy for its protagonist even as it slides toward shocking darkness. Angela Bettis delivers a career-defining performance that keeps you uneasily rooting for May right up until you probably shouldn't.
