Mondo Cane1962
“It enters a hundred incredible worlds where the camera has never gone before!”
Directed by Paolo Cavara, Gualtiero Jacopetti
🏆 Nominated for 1 Oscar. 1 win & 4 nominations total
The premise
A documentary consisting of a series of travelogue vignettes providing glimpses into cultural practices throughout the world intended to shock or surprise, including an insect banquet and a memorable look at a practicing South Pacific cargo cult.
Horror Vault's take
One of cinema's original shockumentaries, Mondo Cane sweeps across the globe to capture human and animal practices designed to unsettle, disturb, and fascinate in equal measure. From unusual culinary traditions to fervent religious rituals, the film frames cultural difference as spectacle. It established the 'mondo' documentary genre that would influence decades of transgressive filmmaking, and its boundary-pushing approach remains provocative to this day.
