The premise
In 19th century Paris, a maniac abducts young women and injects them with ape blood in an attempt to prove ape-human kinship but constantly meets failure as the abducted women die.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the fog-draped streets and shadowy carnival corners of 19th-century Paris, this pre-Code chiller follows a charismatic but deeply sinister showman whose obsession with ape-human kinship drives him to increasingly monstrous acts. Young women begin disappearing, their fates tied to a depraved experiment that blurs the line between science and savagery. Loosely inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's tale, the film drips with expressionist atmosphere and benefits enormously from a memorably menacing lead performance. It remains a striking artifact of early Hollywood horror at its most lurid and unconstrained.
