The premise

In 1969, while studying at the University of Maine, artist Alan Parker becomes obsessed with death. Believing he is losing his girlfriend, he tries to commit suicide on his birthday but his friends manage to stop him. He receives news that his mother has had a stroke and decides to hitchhike to visit her at the hospital.

Horror Vault's take

Set against the eerie backdrop of 1969 New England, a troubled young art student's fragile grip on reality is tested when a personal crisis sends him hitchhiking through the night to reach his hospitalized mother. The dark roadside journey he undertakes becomes something far more sinister than a simple trip, as the rides he catches blur the line between the living and the dead. Adapted from a Stephen King story, the film leans into psychological dread and ghostly atmosphere over outright gore. What begins as a portrait of a young man haunted by suicidal thoughts evolves into a chilling confrontation with forces that may not be entirely of this world.
