The premise
After learning of an urban legend in which a demented serial killer named SMILEY can be summoned through the internet, mentally fragile Ashley must decide whether she is losing her mind or becoming Smiley's next victim.
Horror Vault's take
When college student Ashley hears about a disturbing online ritual said to summon a faceless, grinning killer, she can't shake the feeling that the legend might be all too real. As the body count around her rises, she's left questioning whether the threat is external or a product of her own unraveling psyche. Rooted in early-2010s internet culture, Smiley taps into the creeping dread of anonymous online spaces and the horror that can be born there. The film keeps viewers guessing whether its terror is supernatural, psychological, or something far more human.
