The premise

Jack Torrance accepts a caretaker job at the Overlook Hotel, where he, along with his wife Wendy and their son Danny, must live isolated from the rest of the world for the winter. But they aren't prepared for the madness that lurks within.

Horror Vault's take

When struggling writer Jack Torrance takes a winter caretaker position at the remote Overlook Hotel, he sees it as a chance for a fresh start — bringing his wife Wendy and young son Danny along into the Colorado wilderness. But the hotel's vast, empty corridors hold something ancient and deeply wrong, and the snowbound isolation begins to crack the family apart in terrifying ways. Danny, gifted with a mysterious psychic ability known as 'the shine,' senses dangers his parents cannot — or will not — face. Stanley Kubrick's landmark adaptation is a slow-burn descent into paranoia and dread that burrows under the skin long after the credits roll.
