The premise

When the bizarre mass suicide of 54 high school girls throwing themselves in front of a subway train appears to instigate a string of suicides around the country, Detective Kuroda strives to find the answer, which isn't as simple as he had hoped.

Horror Vault's take

A wave of mass suicides erupts across Japan, beginning with a shocking incident at a Tokyo subway station, and a baffled detective finds himself chasing a mystery that defies rational explanation. The investigation spirals into a labyrinth of cryptic clues, underground culture, and questions about what truly connects — or disconnects — people in modern society. Director Sion Sono uses the detective procedural as a launching pad for a deeply unsettling meditation on identity and collective behavior. Visceral, strange, and deliberately provocative, the film refuses easy answers at every turn.
