“Watch your mouth.”
Directed by Takashi Miike
The premise
An American journalist travels through 19th-century Japan to find the prostitute he fell in love with but instead learns of the physical and existential horror that befell her after he left.
Horror Vault's take
Set in the brothels and fog-drenched rivers of 19th-century Japan, this Masters of Horror entry follows an American searching for a woman he once loved — only to spend a long, terrible night hearing what truly became of her. Director Takashi Miike delivers a story that peels back layer after layer of darkness, blending period atmosphere with visceral dread and deeply unsettling revelations. The film is as much a descent into guilt and complicity as it is a showcase of Miike's most extreme instincts. Few horror films linger this long or this painfully in the memory.
