The premise
A German serial killer preys on boys and young men during the so-called years of crisis between the wars. Based on the true story of Fritz Haarmann, aka the Butcher of Hanover and the Vampire of Hanover.
Horror Vault's take
Set in the shadowy, desperate streets of interwar Germany, this West German cult film reimagines the real-life crimes of Fritz Haarmann — the notorious Butcher of Hanover — through an expressionistic, deeply unnerving lens. A seemingly unremarkable man insinuates himself into a community of the vulnerable and lost, his monstrous appetites concealed beneath a veneer of petty authority. Produced within Rainer Werner Fassbinder's orbit, the film carries a distinctly theatrical, stylized dread that lingers long after it ends. It is less a procedural than a portrait of evil thriving in plain sight.
Content: Violence Against Young Men, Depictions Of Predatory Behavior, Mature Themes Involving Murder And Sexual Exploitation, Dark And Disturbing Tone Throughout
