The premise
Francis, a young man, recalls in his memory the horrible experiences he and his fiancée Jane recently went through. Francis and his friend Alan visit The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, an exhibit where the mysterious doctor shows the somnambulist Cesare, and awakens him for some moments from his death-like sleep.
Horror Vault's take
In the shadowy, angular world of Weimar Germany, a travelling doctor presents his star exhibit to a curious fairground crowd: Cesare, a pale somnambulist who has slept for years and can allegedly foretell the future. When mysterious deaths begin to plague the town, a young man named Francis becomes convinced that the enigmatic Dr. Caligari is at the centre of something deeply sinister. Told through a fractured, unreliable frame narrative, the film bends perception until the viewer can no longer trust what — or whom — to believe. A cornerstone of German Expressionist cinema, its jagged sets and stark shadows remain as disorienting today as they were over a century ago.
