The premise
A world-famous pianist loses both hands in an accident. When new hands are grafted on, he is horrified to learn they once belonged to a murderer.

A celebrated pianist's life is shattered when a catastrophic accident costs him both hands — and the experimental surgery meant to restore his gift brings a horror he never anticipated. Haunted by the origins of his new hands, he descends into psychological torment, unable to escape the shadow of violence they may carry. Directed in the tradition of German Expressionism, the film wrings maximum unease from flickering shadows, distorted sets, and Conrad Veidt's mesmerizing, tortured performance. It remains one of silent cinema's most unsettling explorations of what it means to inhabit a body that feels like a stranger's.
