The premise
Thwarted by his despotic uncle from continuing his love affair, a young man's thoughts turn dark as he dwells on ways to deal with his uncle. Becoming convinced that murder is merely a natural part of life, he kills his uncle and hides the body. However, the man's conscience awakens; paranoia sets in and nightmarish visions begin to haunt him.

One of early cinema's darkest psychological explorations, this 1914 D.W. Griffith silent film plunges into the tortured mind of a young man whose forbidden romance and despotic guardian push him toward unthinkable acts. Drawing on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, it weaves a tale of obsession, creeping paranoia, and a conscience that refuses to stay buried. As nightmarish visions close in on the protagonist, the film blurs the line between waking reality and psychological torment.
