The premise
A masked criminal who dresses like a giant bat terrorizes the guests at an old house rented by a mystery writer.
Horror Vault's take
Long before the slasher genre had a name, this 1926 silent chiller introduced one of cinema's earliest costumed killers — a sinister figure draped in black who stalks the shadowy halls of a remote mansion. A mystery writer and her household find themselves terrorized by the elusive, bat-cloaked criminal known only as The Bat, whose true identity is anyone's guess. Equal parts whodunit and proto-horror, the film blends dark comedy with genuine menace in a way that feels remarkably ahead of its time. Silent-era atmosphere and expressionistic shadows do the heavy lifting, proving that a masked predator in a creaky old house needs no dialogue to unsettle.
