The premise
Mystery writer Cornelia Van Gorder has rented a country house called "The Oaks", which not long ago was the scene of some murders committed by a strange and violent criminal known as "The Bat". Meanwhile, the house's owner, bank president John Fleming, has recently embezzled one million dollars in securities and has hidden the proceeds in the house, but is killed before he can retrieve it.

A renowned mystery writer retreats to a sprawling country estate, unaware that its shadowy halls harbour a deadly legacy — a masked killer known only as The Bat is still at large. When a fortune in stolen money is discovered to be concealed somewhere within the house, the danger surrounding her grows ever more desperate. Vincent Price lends his unmistakable menace to this classic old-dark-house thriller, where everyone in the manor is a suspect and no room is truly safe.
