In the fog-drenched streets of 1831 Edinburgh, a cunning cab driver with a criminal past entangles a respected physician in a web of dark dealings to supply cadavers for medical research. As bodies are procured by increasingly sinister means, the doctor finds himself ever deeper in moral compromise he cannot easily escape. Val Lewton's prestige production crackles with menace, anchored by Boris Karloff in one of his most chilling performances. The film is less about shock than about the slow, suffocating dread of secrets shared between dangerous men.
