Escaping a troubled past, an American woman accepts what seems like a straightforward nanny position at a grand English manor — only to find that her charge is a porcelain doll treated as a living child by his elderly employers. As she reluctantly follows an elaborate set of rules laid out for the doll's care, increasingly strange occurrences begin to blur the line between imagination and something far more disturbing. The crumbling mansion holds more secrets than its eccentric owners let on, and the doll known as Brahms may not be as inanimate as he appears.
