The Brain Eaters1958
“Crawling, Slimy Things, Terror-Bent on Destroying the World!”
Directed by Bruno VeSota
The premise
A huge, alien structure resembling an inverted cone, appears in the woods outside a small rural town. Sent from Washington to investigate the origin of the mysterious object, a team of investigators discovers that intelligent parasites from inside the "cone" can attach themselves to humans' nervous systems and control their minds, taking control of the authorities and workers, making communication with the outside world impossible, and leaving the responsibility of stopping the invasion up to seven people who have thus far been able to avoid possession by these creatures from parts unknown.
Horror Vault's take
When a massive cone-shaped structure materializes in the woods outside a quiet rural town, a government team is dispatched to uncover its origin — and what they find defies all expectation. Intelligent parasitic creatures capable of hijacking the human nervous system have begun spreading through the population, silently turning townsfolk and officials alike into unwilling servants. With communication to the outside world cut off, a shrinking band of uninfected survivors must find a way to fight back before the infestation becomes unstoppable. This lean, paranoid slice of late-50s sci-fi horror taps into Cold War anxieties about infiltration and loss of self.
