The Creature Walks Among Us1956
“A city screams in terror!”
Directed by John Sherwood
The premise
Scientists surgically transform the Creature into an air-breather, but being able to live on land is not enough to make him comfortable with humans. Enraged, he turns his wrath on anyone who comes near as he desperately tries to return to the deep-water world where he truly belongs.
Horror Vault's take
The third chapter in Universal's Gill Man saga takes the iconic amphibious creature in a darker, more tragic direction. A team of scientists ventures into the Florida Everglades determined to capture and surgically alter the Creature, reshaping him for a world he was never meant to inhabit. What follows is less a simple monster rampage and more a somber meditation on what happens when science overrides nature. The Creature's desperate struggle against his new existence gives the film an unexpectedly poignant edge rarely found in 1950s creature features.
