The premise

A charismatic 17th-century French priest becomes the target of a sexually obsessed nun’s witchcraft accusations, which corrupt church and state officials are all too happy to exploit.

Horror Vault's take

Ken Russell's incendiary 1971 masterwork plunges into the fever-swamp of 17th-century France, where a flamboyant and politically inconvenient priest finds himself crushed beneath the weight of institutional corruption and collective madness. When a repressed convent erupts into accusations of witchcraft and diabolical possession, both Church and Crown see an opportunity too useful to ignore. Russell stages the ensuing inquisition as a hallucinatory spectacle — part historical indictment, part baroque nightmare — that remains as shocking and uncompromising today as it was on release. Based on documented historical events, it raises questions about faith, power, and the machinery of persecution that refuse to stay in the past.
