The premise
In 1630, a farmer relocates his family to a remote plot of land on the edge of a forest where strange, unsettling things happen. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, each family member's faith, loyalty and love are tested in shocking ways.
Horror Vault's take
In the harsh wilderness of 1630s New England, a devout Puritan family finds themselves cut off from their colonial settlement and at the mercy of something ancient and malevolent lurking beyond the tree line. As misfortune compounds misfortune, fear curdles into suspicion and the family begins to turn on one another. Robert Eggers' debut feature is a masterclass in slow-building dread, rooted in period-accurate language and an unflinching portrait of faith pushed to its breaking point. Anya Taylor-Joy delivers a commanding performance as the eldest daughter caught at the centre of the gathering darkness.
