The Driller Killer1979
“The Blood Runs In Rivers... And The Drill Keeps Tearing Through Flesh And Bone.”
Directed by Abel Ferrara
The premise
An artist slowly goes insane while struggling to pay his bills, work on his paintings, and care for his two female roommates, which leads him taking to the streets of New York after dark and randomly killing derelicts with a power drill.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the gritty backdrop of late-70s New York City, The Driller Killer follows a struggling painter whose grip on sanity begins to slip under the weight of poverty, sleeplessness, and the relentless noise of a punk band rehearsing next door. As his world narrows into paranoia and rage, the city's homeless population becomes the target of his increasingly unhinged nocturnal urges. Abel Ferrara directs and stars in this raw, low-budget descent into urban madness that doubles as a portrait of a city on the edge. It's less a conventional slasher than a slow-burn psychological unraveling soaked in grime and dread.
