The Horrible Dr. Hichcock1962
“The candle of his lust burnt brightest in the shadow of the grave!”
Directed by Riccardo Freda
The premise
In late 19th century London, a woman weds a necrophiliac doctor whose first wife died under mysterious circumstances - and who might be returning from the grave to torment her successor.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the fog-drenched gaslit streets of Victorian London, this Italian Gothic chiller follows a woman who discovers that her new husband harbors deeply disturbing secrets tied to the fate of his first wife. As strange occurrences plague their grand, shadow-filled estate, she begins to question whether the dead truly stay buried — and whether the man she married is more monster than mourner. Barbara Steele brings her trademark otherworldly intensity to a film that lingers in the space between psychological dread and supernatural menace. Lush, decadent, and deeply perverse, it stands as one of the darkest entries in the Italian Gothic canon.
