“A nightmare tale of depravity!”
Directed by Jorge Grau
The premise
Countess Elizabeth Bathory conspires with her husband to acquire the blood of virgins to maintain her youth and beauty.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the brooding grandeur of a European castle, this 1973 Spanish-Italian production draws on the infamous historical legend of Countess Elizabeth Bathory — a noblewoman whose desperate hunger for eternal youth drives her to monstrous extremes. A conspiracy between the Countess and her husband casts a shadow of dread over the young women who enter their domain, each one a potential sacrifice to vanity. Rooted in Gothic atmosphere rather than outright shock, the film lingers on the sinister elegance of its villain and the helplessness of those caught in her web.
