The premise
Two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

Stranded on a fog-choked New England island in the 1890s, two wickies — a grizzled veteran and his resentful apprentice — find their already fractious dynamic curdling into something far darker as the weeks drag on. Shot in stark, suffocating black and white, the film wraps a slow-burn descent into paranoia and myth around performances of extraordinary intensity. The island itself seems to breathe malevolence, blurring the line between brutal reality and something older and altogether more cosmic. Whether what unfolds is madness, punishment, or revelation is a question the film refuses to answer for you.
