The Magnetic Monster1953
“Terror swoops through the heart of a city in the dead of night!”
Directed by Curt Siodmak, Herbert L. Strock
The premise
The Office of Scientific Investigations tracks down the source of increased magnetism and radioactivity in Los Angeles, and discovers that a man-made isotope is consuming available energy from nearby mass every few hours, doubling its size in the process. Although microscopic, it will soon become big enough to destroy Earth; and how to stop it is yet to be determined. The film's Deltatron special effects footage is taken from the 1934 German sci-fi film GOLD.
Horror Vault's take
When strange electromagnetic disturbances begin plaguing Los Angeles, agents of the Office of Scientific Investigations uncover something deeply unsettling: a synthetic isotope that hungers for energy, doubling in mass every few hours with no apparent ceiling. The threat is invisible, unstoppable by conventional means, and growing — fast. This lean, earnest 1950s sci-fi chiller channels the atomic age's deepest anxieties into a procedural race against annihilation. Repurposed effects footage from a 1934 German production lends the climax an eerie, antique grandeur.
