The premise
Nanny, a London family's live-in maid, brings morbid 10-year-old Joey back from the psychiatric ward he's been in for two years, since the death of his younger sister. Joey refuses to eat any food Nanny's prepared or take a bath with her in the room. He also demands to sleep in a room with a lock. Joey's parents -- workaholic Bill and neurotic Virgie -- are sure Joey is disturbed, but he may have good reason to be terrified of Nanny.

When troubled ten-year-old Joey returns home from a psychiatric facility following a family tragedy, he is gripped by an inexplicable, visceral terror of the household's devoted nanny — a fear his parents dismiss as another symptom of his disturbed mind. Set almost entirely within the suffocating walls of a London townhouse, the film turns the comforting figure of a caregiver into something deeply, quietly threatening. Bette Davis commands every frame as the enigmatic Nanny, radiating warmth and menace in equal measure. The tension builds through what is left unsaid, making this a masterclass in psychological unease.
