The premise

A rare book dealer finds himself at the heart of a string of paranormal events when he is hired to find the last two copies of a text, The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, capable of summoning the Devil.

Horror Vault's take

When a cynical rare book dealer is hired by a wealthy collector to authenticate one of only three surviving copies of a legendary 17th-century occult manuscript, he embarks on a shadowy trek across Europe that grows increasingly dangerous — and inexplicable. Roman Polanski crafts a measured, cerebral thriller soaked in old-world dread, where every clue feels like a trap and every stranger may have an agenda beyond the merely human. The line between rational investigation and genuine supernatural encounter blurs with every page turned.
