The Picture of Dorian Gray2023
“The thrilling adaptation of Dorian Gray.”
Directed by Richard John Taylor
The premise
A modern day retelling of Oscar Wilde’s cautionary tale, it follows actress Dorian as she travels to Matera to be tutored by reclusive screen icon Lady Amelia Wotton for her upcoming Broadway debut as Lady Macbeth. When Wotton asks her granddaughter Evie to photograph Dorian, the girls grow close but is their relationship as innocent as it appears to be, or is there a more sinister curse at work?
Horror Vault's take
A contemporary reimagining of Oscar Wilde's enduring cautionary tale, this film transplants its story of beauty and moral decay to sun-drenched Matera, where an ambitious young actress is drawn into the orbit of a mysterious screen legend. What begins as artistic mentorship and an intimate friendship slowly reveals a far more sinister undercurrent. The film trades Wilde's painted portrait for the modern lens of photography, weaving a lush, unsettling portrait of vanity and the terrible price it may demand.
