The premise
After young Mary Gibson discovers that her older sister Jacqueline has disappeared, she leaves her boarding school and heads to New York City to track down her sibling. But Mary gets drawn deeper into the mystery.

A young woman abandons the safety of boarding school to search for her vanished sister in New York City, only to find that the trail leads into the shadowy corners of Greenwich Village and the dangerous orbit of a secretive Satanic cult. Producer Val Lewton's understated approach keeps the menace largely off-screen, letting dread seep through suggestion and shadow rather than spectacle. With its film-noir atmosphere and haunted performances, the film weaves a meditation on death and despair that feels strikingly modern for its era.
