The premise

For Halloween 1992, the BBC decides to broadcast an investigation into the supernatural, hosted by TV chat-show legend Michael Parkinson. Parky (assisted by Mike Smith, Sarah Greene & Craig Charles) and a camera crew attempt to discover the truth behind the most haunted house in Britain. This ground-breaking live television experiment does not go as planned, however.

Horror Vault's take

On Halloween night 1992, the BBC aired what appeared to be a live outside broadcast — a celebrity-fronted investigation into a supposedly haunted family home. Fronted by real-life television personalities playing fictionalised versions of themselves, the programme blurs the line between entertainment and genuine terror with escalating, almost imperceptible unease. What begins as a cosy, sceptical chat-show exercise steadily dismantles its own reassuring format. Few pieces of British television have weaponised the familiar so effectively against the viewer.
